What is Midface Descent?
With aging lower eyelid, apart from the fat bags, the junction between the lids and the cheek becomes apparent. This is because of gravitational descent and deflation of the cheek fat, and is called mid-face descent.
What is Midface Rejuvenation?
For patients with midface descent, apart from the blepharoplasty (removal of excess skin/fat), creating a smooth continuum from the eyelid to the cheek is important. This can be achieved either by a
1) Midface lift (lifting the descended fat back up)
2) Autologous fat transfer (Fat from the tummy is harvested, converted into a thin paste, and injected into the groove to make it a smooth contour).
3) Lower eyelid fat repositioning, where the eyelid bags are tucked into the hollow/groove below it, to create a smooth continuum.
Procedure The Midface rejuvenation is a 60-90 min procedure performed through an incision hidden behind the lower eyelid. Excessive fat is carefully tucked into the groove below the bag, and additional fat transfer may be done.
Midface rejuvenation is performed as a day-care procedure under complete sleep anesthesia (general anaesthesia) or with sedation. It takes 30-45 minutes per eyelid, and post-operative discomfort is mild to moderate. Temporary skin stitches, are removed in 5-7 days. Most patients are back to light work within a week.
