Fat Transfer and Fat Injections
Fat Transfer, also known as Fat Injections or Fat Grafting is the technique of moving fat from one area of the body to another. It is used to improve contour, correct defects, or enhance features. Similar, less permanent results can also be achieved with Filler injections like Restylane or
Perlane.

Patient with a left artificial eye. Autologous fat transfer was performed to reduce the left upper eyelid 'hollow'.
Age:
Fat transfer can be performed on patients of any age, with the average age being 48.
Surgical Technique:
Fat is harvested through a liposuction canula (tube) from the abdomen or hips and carefully prepared for re-injection to separate the cells from the fluid. The fat is then injected with a blunt needle and syringe into the desired locations such as the cheeks, eyebrows, under the eyes, the lips, or around the mouth.
Surgical Time and Recovery:
Fat Transfer surgery is performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia and usually takes about 90 minutes. Stitches if placed, are removed in a week (generally not required). Patients can usually return to work within a few days to a week, although swelling may take longer to subside.
Notes:
The amount of fat removed from the donor site is minimal compared to traditional liposuction surgery, and will not alter the appearance of that location. Fat transfer tends to be more permanent when injected around the eyes, and less so when injected for Lip Augmentation or around the chin or mouth. Repeat treatments may be necessary.
Related Procedures:
Fat Transfer procedure can be combined with a Blepharoplasty,
Endoscopic
Brow Lift,
Face

Mid
Face (Cheek) Lift,

or Fillers.
